VAT calculator for Bangladesh

The short answer

To add VAT, multiply the price by the rate: ৳1,000 at 15% is ৳150 VAT, ৳1,150 in total. To take VAT out of a price that already includes it, divide by 1 + the rate: ৳1,150 ÷ 1.15 = ৳1,000 before VAT, so the VAT is ৳150.

The amount I have is…
VAT rate

VAT

৳150

Amount − amount ÷ (1 + rate)

Price before VAT

৳1,000

Price including VAT

৳1,150

How it’s calculated

  • Adding VAT: VAT = price × rate; total = price + VAT.
  • Removing VAT: price before VAT = amount ÷ (1 + rate); VAT = amount − price before VAT.

Worked example

A receipt says ৳2,300 including 15% VAT. 2,300 ÷ 1.15 = ৳2,000 before VAT, so ৳300 is VAT.

Questions

What is the VAT rate in Bangladesh?

The standard rate is 15%. Reduced rates (for example 5%, 7.5% and 10%) apply to some goods and services — confirm your item's rate with NBR.

Why can't I just take 15% off a VAT-inclusive price?

Because the 15% was added to the smaller, pre-VAT price. 15% of ৳1,150 is ৳172.50, but the VAT in it is only ৳150.
